About Memento Mori: The Art of Death and Mourning

An old sketch of the Becker death mask, a man's face with his eyes closed. He has a mustache and goatee.

Memento Mori, "remember that you will die," expresses the inevitability of death. Explore the darker side of our collections through hallmarks of how we mourn, celebrate, deny, and ultimately accept death.

"Why should I fear death? If I am, death is not. If death is, I am not. Why should I fear that which can only exist when I do not?" —Epicurus

These representations and beliefs provide an important cultural understanding of death and mourning.

"These kinds of human expressions, humorous or horrific, that all point to how we deal, through art and words, with death and the fear that often accompanies it." —John DeVilbiss.
