Material Culture

Informant:

Betty McConkie is 76 years old. She is a well known quilter in the Moab area. She has been married for 43 years and has six children and twenty-four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. McConkie is a member of the Mormon Church and likes to quilt with the ladies in her church at Homemaking, the women's meeting held once a month.

Context:

Mrs. McConkie lives next door to my parents. I have always known that she was a wonderful quilter because she always has a guilt on frames and is working on it in her livingroom. She has a tradition of making quilts for her family when they graduate from high school. When I graduated from high school last year she made me a small sunflower quilt. I was so excited.

Text:

Quilt with multi-colored sunflowers

Texture:

Mrs. McConkie's quilts and her custom of making quilts for her family members (and special neighbors) at graduation from high school shows her love for them by giving them something that they can hold on to when we is gone. It also connects her to her Mormon roots of quilting and attending LDS Homemaking to make quilts for new brides, babies, the sick, and those in need.
