Beyond The Diversity Assignment: Applying Critical Approaches to Pedagogy

The Center for Intersectional Gender Studies and Research and the USU Libraries are holding an in-person, interdisciplinary, day-long workshop for instructors to revolutionize your classroom and teaching.

Join us for this interdisciplinary, day-long workshop for instructors to revolutionize your classroom and teaching. Critical and inclusive pedagogy is more than the “diversity” assignment; engage in a hands-on collaboration to revolutionize your course’s major assignment and syllabus using critical and intersectional pedagogy lenses. With a keynote by Mario I. Suárez (TEAL) and experienced instructor-facilitators, this workshop will feature voices of USU leaders in this work and provide participants actionable strategies for elevating their teaching.

Facilitators will include:

  • Gustavo Ovando-Montejo
  • Marilyn Cuch
  • Cree Taylor
  • Beth Buyserie
  • Adena Rivera-Dundas
  • Elizabeth Vargis

This event is co-sponsored by the Center for Intersectional Gender Studies and Research, USU Libraries and the Vice President of Statewide Campuses, who will compensate travel for all Statewide participants. This is a learning space where participants don’t have to be experts but do bring valuable experiences, perspectives, and questions to the table so that we can learn together.

Participant Commitment:

  • Submit a research or signature assignment (drafts are fine) and course description by Friday, April 14th
  • Review 2-3 interdisciplinary colleagues’ assignments prior to the in-person workshop
  • Bring your course syllabus (drafts are fine) to the workshop for reflection and discussion
  • Participate in a full-day workshop, which includes a keynote, large and small group discussions, and the opportunity to share your feedback on your colleagues’ assignments and receive feedback on yours

Benefits to Participants

  • Receive feedback on a course assignment from fellow instructors, a campus leader in critical and inclusive pedagogy, and a librarian
  • Reflect on how to apply critical approaches to your course, assignment, and teaching practices
  • Engage in a community of practice around teaching
