Katie Luder helps the field trippers with a decoding message.

Local 4th grade students from Northpark Elementary visited Utah State University for a field trip on November 9th. These students had stops at The Merrill-Cazier Library, the Geology Museum and the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art. This collaboration between departments across campus allows 4th grade students from across Cache Valley to experience USU.

While at the library, Outreach Librarian Katie Luder led this group in a hands-on activity. Students explored Utah’s Indigenous history by learning about the Navajo Nation and the Navajo Code Talker’s role in World War II. Students worked in teams to decode a secret message.

These field trips are a wonderful opportunity for local elementary students to experience an academic library and learn about Utah’s rich history.
