WHAT IS THE BARN?

THE BARN (Borrower’s Automated Retrieval Network) is an automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS). This warehouse-type stores library materials in an onsite high density, cost effective and climate-controlled manner.

Why do we have a BARN?

Live picture of the first floor ASRS work room. Funding for replacing the Merrill Library covered construction for a building the same size as the Merrill Library - in other words, no room to grow. The BARN allowed us to devote space for study rooms and open study, yet still accommodates growth of collections through 2025.

How long will it take for me to get materials from the BARN?

Typically under 5 minutes.

What is stored in the BARN?

How do I get the journal/book I want?

Request from the Library Catalog.

What is the check-out period for bound journals?

Live image of the second crane in the ASRS Two days.

Can I check out current issues of journals?

No. Current journals receive very high use. This coupled with the problems of having all the issues available when it comes time to bind the volume led to the decision to keep current journals non-circulating.

Can I browse the books and journals that are stored in the BARN?

Yes. Circulation desk staff can assist you will books and the Journals desk staff with journals. Our system is unique in that you may sit and browse approximately 200 volumes at a time.

Where can I see the BARN in action?

We have viewing windows on the second, third, and fourth floors.
