"Why can't I view digital copies of the photographs?" This is a commonly asked question for new users to our site. USU Special Collections & Archives houses hundreds of thousands of
images. Although a few photos have been digitized, we do not have the staff or money to digitize all our collections.
The photo collection inventories are designed to help you narrow your search for useful images.
About 3500 photographs have been digitized. To view those images please see our digitized photographs page.
The vast majority of our images, however, have not been digitized and to view them you will either need to
visit Special Collections in person or have photocopies mailed to you. If you cannot visit in person
please contact the photograph curator and he will search for you as time permits. Once you've found the photographs you want
there are a number of options for making reproductions.
There are two options to search for photographs on-line. 87 photo collections consisting of over 62,000 images and 500 boxes
have been cataloged and processed and can be found using the USU
Libraries on-line catalog. There is also a search engine provided on the Special Collections & Archives web page. Type in
a word (or words) and it will go through the electronic inventories and produce a list of photograph collections that
contain those words. Use the “find” feature of your browser to then search the individual collection inventories. You can search a phrase (for example "Merlin Olsen") by putting it in quotations. If you search for
two words without
using the quotation marks (for example Merlin Olsen) it will search for all the inventories that have both Terrell and
Davis somewhere in them. There is a
list of all our processed photo collections on the Special Collections website.
Some of these collections have inventories and some do not.
Please note that the Compton Studio Register is only
available by visiting the Special Collections & Archives Department. Some of the older inventories
on our website are incomplete.
To view the photographs you find you will either need to visit Special Collections
in person or contact the photo curator for copies. If you visit Special Collections remember to write down the photo collection number
and photo number so staff can pull the correct photo.
