Cache Valley Historical Society Papers, (1951-1962, 1983-2008)
COLL MSS 43
Historical Note:
The Cache Valley Historical Society was founded October 24, 1951 at Logan, Utah as the first local chapter of the Utah State Historical Society. The founding of the society was largely spearheaded by Dr. Joel E. Ricks, a Utah State University (USU) history professor, and during the society’s first year of operation it consisted of fifty-two members. The first major undertaking by the society was to compile a publication on the history of Cache Valley to commemorate the one-hundredth anniversary of its settlement. In 1956 the society produced A History of a Valley which received praise and an award of merit from the Association for State and Local History.
Between the 1950s and 1970s the society worked in conjunction with the USU History Department, and professors such as J. Duncan Brite, S. George Ellsworth, and Leonard J. Arrington sought to collect and preserve historic materials relative to the study of local and state history. These efforts also played a role in establishing USU Special Collections & Archives.
Today the Cache Valley Historical Society meets monthly for lectures, field trips, and other projects that deal with local history.
Provenance Note:
The original materials in this collection were donated to USU Special Collections in batches between the years of 1976 and 1981 by the Cache Valley Historical Society, represented by S. George Ellsworth. The most recent batches of materials were donated between 2003 and 2005 by Marie Christensen and in 2008 by Daniel Davis and Kent Christensen
Scope & Content Note:
This collection contains the working papers and records of the Cache Valley Historical Society and spans the period of 1951 to 1962, and 1983-2008. These papers consist of Society meeting minutes, correspondence, meeting programs, newspaper clippings, copies of papers presented to the society, by-laws and constitutions, and other similar papers.
Prior to donation these papers were bound by the Society and arranged chronologically and topically, and the collection has been arranged in reflection of this organization.
In the newspaper clippings located in the 1983-2006 material were articles about the society meetings, society members, and events that occurred in Cache Valley and Utah. There are several newspaper clippings on the Utah Centennial in 1996.
