These papers contain correspondence to and from Reynold Kirby,
one of the first Episcopal priests in Utah. Kirby was instrumental in the
development of St. Mark's Hospital in Salt Lake City. Letters and
telegraphs were written after Kirby was chosen to succeed Daniel S. Tuttle
as Bishop of the Utah and Nevada region in 1886. His responses are
included, explaining that he could not accept the position due to family
constraints and other business in Chicago. The photographs are Kirby on a
camping trip.

A comprehensive collection of primary and secondary sources from
Cache Valley, Utah and Idaho, collected over the lifetime of Newell Hart.
The thirty-five boxes of materials make this one of the largest resources
concerning this region. Main features of the collection include: Battle of
Bear River documents, Oneida Stake Academy information, and Cache
Valley newsletters. The collection is organized into three main areas.
First, subject files by alphabetical arrangement, include letters, articles, and
family histories. Second, the Cache Valley Newsletter, including letters,
articles, stories, obituaries, and submissions. Third, research files for
Hart's book, BearRiver Massacre. The last two boxes contain
miscellaneous publications not applicable to other categories. The
photographs have been added to the Photography Collection, USU
Archives.

Johnson was a blacksmith in Preston, Idaho. Box one contains
three ledgers, 1921-1949. Some water damage has occurred, but most
names are legible. All ledgers concern transactions between Johnson and
local merchants. The catalogue is in good condition and concerns welding
and farming implements from George Lowe Company, 1941.

Collected by Newell Hart (See MSS 3), the Howell family lived in
Clifton, Idaho. The collection includes personal papers, correspondence,
and records from the Clifton Ward of the LDS Church. The letters are to
Parley Howell while recovering from surgery in Salt Lake City. Also
correspondence from Parley to Cliff Howell when he was hospitalized in
Clifton, Idaho.

These papers chronicle the lives of two important American
naturalists, John and Robert Ridgeway. John worked as chief illustrator for
the U.S. Geological Survey and his materials are mostly artwork. Robert
served on the 40th Parallel Survey in 1867 and his incoming and outgoing
correspondence are included. The collection is organized into
correspondence, miscellaneous information, and artwork. Artwork may be
located in the Art and Art Books section of the USU archives.

This collection is composed of information concerning the
Consolidated Theater Company, an umbrella organization that ran the
Capitol and Lyric Theaters in Logan. The company was owned and
operated by the Thatcher family, and includes correspondence from various
Thatcher family members. The material is not organized in any particular
order. Torn pages have been repaired , and some pages have been
deacidified where necessary and encapsulated for preservation.
CAINE MSS 10 THE MORRISITE COLLECTION, 1865-1975.

Dr. C. Leroy Anderson (1931-) compiled this thorough collection
relating to the Church of the First Born or Morrisite Church. Joseph
Morris, founder of the Morrisites, left the LDS Church, claiming that
Brigham Young did not have the authority from God to lead the Church.
Morris was excommunicated from the LDS Church in 1858, and
established his own church of which he was the prophet. When he was
killed in an exchange of gunfire between his followers and law
enforcement, George Williams became the leader of the movement. Many
of the followers were of Danish decent and many of the revelations were
written in Danish. The collection contains Dr. Anderson's research
materials and notes, histories, correspondence, copies of books and
magazines related to the Morrisites, articles, and tracts and pamphlets.
Also included is a copy of a history of the Morrisites written by Mark
Forscutt. Holographed items of original documents may be found at the
end of the collection.

Reverend Liebler, an Episcopal priest, established a mission to the
Navaho Indians at Bluff, Utah, in 1943 named St. Christopher's. He
continued his missionary labors there for the remainder of his life, working
to address physical and spiritual needs. The collection, because of its
religious nature, is restricted and photocopying must be approved with the
Curator. Boxes 1-7 contain the St. Christopher Mission files, and are
arranged alphabetically. Boxes 8-23 contain miscellaneous subject files.
Boxes 24-32 contain correspondence. Boxes 33 and 34 include
newsletters, oversized items, and newspaper clippings. Boxes 35-39
include reel to reel tape recordings of interviews and radio programs. Box
40 holds 16 mm silent movies. Box 41 contains a 130 page narrative about
a recollection of the mission, by another member of the mission. A film
documentary about Father Liebler has been made using parts of this
collection.

This collection contains several unpublished manuscripts written by
Robert Austin Bacon. The manuscript in box one "Pecos of the Seventy-Nine Ranch" is an autobiographical novel about Bacon's work as a cowboy
on the Chisolm Trail. Box two contains "The Cowboy From the North," a
manuscript about the cowboy experience in Northern Arizona. Box three
includes miscellaneous papers of R.A.Bacon, photographs, poems, cowboy
prints, and family letters.

Hart and to his children, all from Preston, Idaho. There is also material
about Arthur's father James Hart and material about a lawsuit between
Arthur and H.D. Maughn. One item relating to the Oneida Irrigation
District. A photocopy of a letter from Brigham Young to James Hart is
included.

Eight volumes containing the records of the Fielding Social Club, a
women's organization to promote civic improvement and education in the
Fielding, Utah community. Five volumes contain minutes of the meetings,
three volumes contain the club's history, written in the mid-1960's. There
are also pioneer signatures from the 1920's in the collection and financial
records. Most records are in good condition.

The Golden Hour Club was a women's club established in 1914 in
Preston, Idaho. The records were collected by Newell Hart (see MSS 3).
The minute books from the bi-monthly meetings make up most of the
collection, followed by a short history and rules of the club. One ledger of
financial records from 1937-1975 and some miscellaneous correspondence
also.

A collection of correspondence from the Alfred H.Caine family.
Alfred was the son of John T. Caine, a Utah Congressman. He was
employed at the House Coal Company and worked in Coalville and Salt
Lake City, Utah. He died in 1890 at the age of thirty years. The collection
includes letters to Alfred from his wife Maggie, his father John, and friends,
as well as letters he wrote to Maggie. Most correspondence is from the
time Alfred served as a Mormon missionary to Japan. There is some water
and fire damage. Papers have been repaired and encapsulated where
necessary.

Hyrum Larsen was a farmer from Newton, Utah. His journals
depict a wonderful account of daily farm life, including weather, seeding,
crops, new appliances, and farm machinery. Two missionary diaries from
1898-1890 are also included. The paper has some damage and has been
deacidified where needed. Photographs from his mission are included.

CAINE MSS 19 MORMON AFFIDAVITS AND PETITIONS, 1837-1839.

This collection of Mormon affidavits and petitions pertains to the
persecutions of the Mormons while in Missouri in 1837-1839. The
photocopies have been made from the originals which are housed at the
National Archives, and the records were originally submitted to the House
Judiciary Committee. A description of the entire collection is contained in
Paul C. Richards' Missouri Persecutions: Petitions for Redress, "BYU
Studies," XIII, Summer, 1973.

This box contains two trade tokens. The first token is from the
People's Mercantile and Creamery, a Richmond, UT, general store which
was founded in 1896. The other is from A.U. Hobson and Company of
Richmond , which also was founded in the 1860's. Both token's have a
face value of fifty cents.

the Hyde Park Ladies Literary Club, a women's club in Hyde Park, Utah
from 1956-1982. There is also a scrapbook of the club.
CAINE MSS 22-24 THE MONTPELIER RAILROAD UNIONS, 1884-1954.

These records of the Montpelier Railroad Unions were found at an
Oddfellow's Hall in Montpelier, Idaho. They include records of the
Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen (which later became the Brotherhood
of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen), the women's counterpart to the
Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen, and the Brotherhood
of Railroad Trainmen. The railroad brought economic strength to this small
Idaho town, and lasted until the 1950's when the railroad headquarter's
were moved to Pocatello, Idaho. The records are indicative of the impact
the railroad had on the labor movement. Records of the union meetings,
financial ledgers, and lodge files make up the collection.
CAINE MSS 25 KNIGHTS OF PYTHIAS RESOLUTE LODGE #16, 1897-1902
This ledger from the Knights of Pythias in Mercur, Utah, was found
in a thrift store in Brigham City. It is one of the few remaining records of
Mercur, which burned down in June of 1902. This order was established in
1864, and was quite active in 19th century Utah. The ledger contains notes
on meetings, attendees, financial information, and lodge business.
CAINE MSS 26 YOUNG, JOHN W., 1844-1924.

John W. Young, the son of Mary Ann Angell and Brigham Young,
served in the presidency of the LDS church. The papers mainly cover
Young's involvement in the railroad construction business, with the
Atlantic and Pacific Railroad Company and the Utah Western Railway.
Correspondence concerns a land deal in Northern Mexico and legal papers.
The papers span the time period from 1874-1889.

Stein was a stage agent, working with the Overland Express, and
transferred to Salt Lake City in 1862. The collection includes requests for
supplies, invoices, bank contracts, and other miscellaneous items. The
documents were collected by Herbert S. Auerbach. Most of the papers
have been encapsulated for preservation purposes.

mountain men that Auerbach had taken interest in. He posted an
advertisement in the Deseret News, and these were the responses from men
personally acquainted with them.

Carter was sutter and probate judge of Fort Bridger from 1859-1881. The collection includes letters and business records while serving at
the Fort. Carter came to Fort Bridger with Johnson's Army in 1857 and
settled there. He was known as Mr. Fort Bridger for his important role.
The papers are in chronological order.
CAINE MSS 30 THE SALT LAKE OPERA COMPANY, 1857-1921.

The Salt Lake Opera Company was formed in 1897 by Goddard,
Weihe, and Spencer. The letters cover the various elements needed to run
a turn of the century opera company, including: costumes, music, actors,
theaters, etc. The smallest group of letters focuses on the actors and the
availability of roles.
This Ogden based brewery was founded in 1890 by Gustave, John, and Albert Becker. The company
manufactured beer, soft drinks, ice, and related products. The company’s market extended throughout the
Intermountain West. The collection contains a wide variety of business records primarily covering the
years 1896-1917, and especially 1913-1917.
