Help On English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC)

Description

The English Short Title Catalogue lists over 460,000 items, mainly in English, published between 1473 and 1800. The items, from the British Library and 2,000 other collections, were published mostly in the British Isles and North America. The English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC) began as the Eighteenth Century Short Title Catalogue, with a conference jointly sponsored by the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies and the British Library, held in London in June 1976. The aim of the original project was to create a machine-readable union catalogue of books, pamphlets, and other ephemeral material printed in English-speaking countries from 1701 to 1800. Note that many of the items catalogued in the ESTC are available in full-text through the Hathi Trust and Early English Books Online.
