Q: How long can I check out a book?A: Undergraduate students – 3 weeks; Graduate students and staff – 16 weeks; Faculty members – 16 weeks; Others – 2 weeks
Q: How will I know the due dates for books I check out?A: Sign up for email notification, and staff in the Circulation department will send you a notice via email near the date that books are due as well as overdue notices:

Q: How many items may I check out from the Library?A: Graduate students and faculty – 100; Emeritus professors – 100; Staff – 50; Undergraduate students – 35; Others – 10
Q: How can I renew loans of books?A: Call the Book Check Out/Circulation desk (7-2633) or log onto your library catalog account. Books may be renewed twice.
Q: How long can I check out a journal?A: Bound volumes of journals are stored in the BARN and may be checked out for 2 days. Loans may be renewed only in person. Current issues of journals are located on the second floor (east side) and do not circulate.
Q: How can I put a hold on a book?A: You can request that a ‘Hold’ be placed on a book that’s checked out:
visit the Book Check Out/Circulation desk on the first floor of the Merrill-Cazier Library. Or use the Online Catalog, click the “request item” link in the record for the book that you want. This will lead to a form to log into your Online Catalog account. You may sign up to receive email notification that a book you’ve requested is available: https://library.usu.edu/Circ/signmail.php
Q: What is the BARN (Borrower’s Automated Retrieval Network)?A:
BARN FAQsQ: How can a student/grad student check out materials for a professor?A: Professors may arrange at the Book Check Out/Circulation desk for a student to have proxy borrower privileges. Both professor and student must visit the library to make this arrangement. Proxy borrowing privileges enable the student to check out items using their own card, but the items will appear on the professor’s library record. There is no charge for this service.
Q: How can members of the general public check out U.S. government documents? A: Any U.S. Citizen is entitled to check out government documents free of charge. Staff at the Book Check Out/Circulation desk have a special permit for this service.
Q: How can community members who are not affiliated with USU check out books?A: Community members or alumni may purchase a General Public card, which costs $25.00 per year and entitles them to check out up to 10 books at a time for two weeks.
Q: How will the Library notify me if I have an overdue book?A: You may sign up for email notification service, and staff in the Circulation Department will send a notice close to the due date that items are due: https://library.usu.edu/Circ/signmail.php
Q: How can I find a book that isn’t on the shelf where the catalog says it should be?A: Books may not be on the shelf because they are checked out to someone. Check the record in the Library Online Catalog to see if a book has been checked out and when it is due. If a book you want has not been checked out but is not where it should be, try checking the following places:
- Look on shelves labeled ‘Reshelve’ near the call number location where your book should be located.
- Look around on tables near the call number location of the book you want; often patrons gather a number of books and take them to a study table to browse.
- Look near photocopy machines in case someone may been copying pages from the book you want.
- If you can’t locate the book, go to the Book Check Out/Circulation desk on the first floor and request that library staff search for the book.
Q: I’ve lost a library book. Is it possible for me to replace it for the Library?
A: You may buy a copy of the book and give it to the library. If the book was a hardback, you should supply a replacement that is in similar condition and that is the same or a later edition.
Q: May I use my USU card and Aggie Express Account to pay for library services and overdue fines?
A: You may use your Aggie Express Account to pay for most transactions in the library. This includes purchasing a VendaCard to make photocopies, paying overdue fines, making transparencies, locker rentals and thesis/dissertation binding fees. Exceptions are transactions in Government Documents and Special Collections & Archives.
Q: How can I add money to my Aggie Express Account (USU Card)?
