Locating the Complete Article

Articles Available in the Database You are Using

bullet Check to see if the article is available full-text in the database you are using.

bullet In EBSCO, for example, look for the following icons:

A good option if you have a slow connection. It does not include pictures, maps, graphs, etc.

The article looks just as it does in print. A good option if you need pictures or a reference to a page number.

Finding Articles with Article Linker

Look for an Article Linker icon near the citation or the summary of the article.

Article Linker icon Article Linker walks you through the steps of locating the article, either electronically or in print.

Articles Available in Electronic Format

1. Click the Article Linker button Article Linker icon. A new screen will open.

2. The citation information (the information you need to locate and cite the article) will appear at the top of the screen.

3. Step 1 shows links to the database(s) containing an electronic copy of the article, if it is available electronically.

4. Click Article for the database that matches the dates you need. Compare the dates for which we have electronic access to the journal with the date of your article. Older articles might only be available in print.

5. Follow the procedures for locating the full-text article in the database you chose. Each database looks and operates somewhat differently. Please contact a librarian if you need further assistance.

Note: If the Article option is not available, click Journal for the database that matches the dates you need and browse or search for the article. Here are two examples:

Articles Available in Print Format

For example, you have found the following information in an article database:

1. Click the Article Linker button Article Linker icon.

2. After you click the Article Linker button, Step 1 is missing, indicating the article is not available electronically. After the citation information, you see Step 2.

3. Click By Journal Title to search the library catalog and find out if we have a print subscription to the journal for the date and issue you need.

4. In this case, the journal title is Human Factors (listed as the Source in the above citation). The title will appear first on the list of results if we have a print subscription.

5. Click the journal title. View the full record and find out for which dates we have a subscription and where the journal is located. All print copies of journals older than the current year will be in the BARN, or onsite storage. See instructions for requesting a journal from the BARN.

Articles Available Through Interlibrary Loan

You have found the following information in an article database:

1. Click the Article Linker button linker icon.

2. After you click the Article Linker button, Step 1 is missing. After the citation information, you see Step 2.

3. Click By Journal Title to search the library catalog and find out if we have a print subscription to the journal for the date that you need. In this case, the journal title is the Journal of Safety Research (listed as the Source in the above citation). The search did not find a subscription for the Journal of Safety Research; the catalog displayed the closest alphabetical match instead.

4. Scroll down to Step 3. Click Request the journal using Interlibrary Loan to open the Interlibrary Loan web page.

5. Request a copy of the article via Interlibrary Loan. Click First Time Users or Log-on to ILLiad and follow the instructions to request the article.

Other Options

If you have a citation for an article, you can find full-text copies of articles to which we have an electronic subscription by searching for the journal in the E-Journals database.

If the article is not available in full-text, you can get a print copy of the article if the library owns it. To see if Merrill-Cazier Library has the article, look up the title of the journal in the Online Catalog and retrieve volumes from storage in the BARN.
