Online Databases Available at USU
The USU Libraries subscribe to several online tools that you can use to track down secondary source literature for Medieval Studies. These resources generally contain citations to articles, books, and dissertations.
Arts & Humanities Citation Index
- Citation index to high impact, scholarly journal literature.

- Useful for locating articles in the discipline of Art History but also indexes images.
- Database of dissertations and theses from virtually every North American and many European universities. This is the electronic verson of Dissertations Abstracts. Dissertations published since 1997 are available in full text.
- This is a general article database that covers the Middle Ages.
- Because Historical Abstracts covers only information pertaining to
1450 and later, Humanities Abstracts is generally considered the
best basic database for history prior to that time period.
- Database produced by the Modern Language Association covering language and literature and including citations from over 4,400 journals and series, monographs, working papers and conference proceedings.
Religion and Philosophy Collection
- Article database including more than 300 full text journals.
- Coverage includes biblical studies, religious history, epistemology, political philosophy, philosophy of language, moral philosophy and the history of philosophy.
- Global catalog that searches the online catalogs of libraries worldwide.
- Coverage includes books, serials/journals, manuscripts,
archival material, etc.

- Housed at Fordham University, this site includes extensive links
to a wide variety of information types including the full text of
primary source documents; bibliographies of print and online resources; maps and images; information on the Saints' Lives; etc.
- Housed at Georgetown University, this site has links to electronic texts, scholarly societies, and websites grouped by subject.
- Online community of Medievalists offering texts, working tools and reflections on historiography, primarily from the Italian scholarly community.
- Access to scholarly resources for Western Middle Ages and the the Renaissance, primarily designed for librarians but also useful for scholars.

It is possible that you will come across books and articles to which we do not have access locally. The USU Library provides interlibrary loan services at no charge to enrolled students. Often your articles will arrive within a day or two, although book delivery generally takes somewhat longer. For more information, visit the Interlibrary Loan website.

Many of you will be continuing your studies of the Middle Ages at the graduate level where you will be exposed to libraries with much more extensive resources. Some of the resources that you will want to be aware of include:
ATLA
- The premier index for all fields of religion.
- Subjects:
antiquities and archaeology, Bible, church history, ecumenism,
ethics, missions, pastoral ministry, philosophy, religions andreligious studies, theology. - FULL ACCESS AVAILABLE AT BYU.
- Iter's bibliography includes literature pertaining to the Middle Ages and Renaissance (400-1700).
- Citations for books, journal material (articles, reviews, review articles, bibliographies, catalogues, abstracts and discographies) are included, as are citations for essays in books (including entries in conference proceedings, festschriften, encyclopedias and exhibition catalogues).
- Limited searching is available for no charge.
- FULL ACCESS AVAILABLE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH AND BYU.
International Medieval Bibliography
- Now produced at the University of Leeds, the IMB was founded in 1967 with the support of the Medieval Academy of America, with the aim of providing a comprehensive, current bibliography of articles in journals and miscellany volumes (conference proceedings, essay collections or Festschriften) worldwide.
- FULL ACCESS AVAILABLE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH.
- Full text Patrological texts covering authors of the 2nd century through 15th centuries.
- The CD-ROM contains the
complete texts of the Corpus Patrum Latinorum (including the
Corpus Christianorum, Series Latina, and the Continuatio
Mediaevalis), as well as the Vulgate, Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament, the complete works of Augustine, Jerome, and many others. - FULL ACCESS AVAILABLE AT BYU.
