JPRS was the largest single producer of English language translations. JPRS was established in 1957 to provide agencies of the federal government with translations of foreign documents in all fields of technology, science, and the social sciences. Translations were done by private researchers and linguists under commercial contract with JPRS, and were commissioned and financed by various government agencies. JPRS TRANSLATES MATERIALS FROM WHICH GEOGRAPHIC REGIONS? THE FOREIGN BROADCAST INFORMATION SERVICE (FBIS), a sister agency to the JPRS.
