Context Focused Fieldwork
Most scholars agree that in order to really understand folklore as a living tradition, it must be observed and experienced first-hand. The purpose of this fieldwork paper, therefore, is for you to observe, document, and analyze folklore in context. You are to examine one or two kinds of contexts for a single folklore performance in order to answer the question "What is the function(s) of this folklore?
This project has three parts. In part one, you will choose a topic for documentation and learn how to document. In part two, you will turn your raw fieldwork into data. And, finally, stage three, you will write an interpretive paper based on your fieldwork.
Final papers, unless otherwise noted, will be added to the FOLK COLLECTION 8: USU (USU Undergraduate Student Fieldwork Collection) in USU's Special Collections & Archives.
