The Merrill-Cazier Library contains over 1,505,000 total volumes,
including 620,800 books, 300,370 government documents, over 100,000
maps, 12,760 current serial subscriptions, and access to over 200 bibliographic, fulltext,
and informational databases. The Library is a regional depository of U.S. government
publications, and, thus, has extensive holdings of U.S. agency documents, maps, and
periodicals.
Utah State University is a Land-Grant institution and classified
as an RU/H (Research University--high research activity) in the most recent
Carnegie classification scheme.
The graduate program of USU
is classified as "Doc/STEM".
Unlike many research universities, USU is not a member of the
Association of Research Libraries (ARL),
which comprises the top 113 research libraries in North America.
In 2005, the Merrill-Cazier
Library opened its doors. This new building integrates the entire collection
into one facility, where it had formerly been housed in two separate buildings: the Merrill Library (for
humanities and social sciences) and the Cazier Science and Technology Library. To
accomplish this, an expansion of approximately 189,000 square feet was added to
the existing 116, 000 square feet in the Cazier Library, replacing the 202,000 square
feet of the Merrill building, which has been vacated and demolished.
Reflecting the university's curriculum and research agenda,
the USU Library has strong collections in agriculture, natural resources,
and technology. We are also working to improve the collections in
the arts, humanities, and social sciences. As new programs are developed,
we look forward to working with departments and administrators to ensure that
valuable library collections and information resources are made available to
students and faculty in these areas.
