New Web Access to SciFinder Scholar

May 28th, 2009

SciFinder Scholar (Chemical Abstracts database) is now available via the web and no longer requires downloading of client software. USU students and faculty members may register for an account. The client version of SciFinder will be discontinued on June 26, 2009.

To register for an account:
1) It is necessary that you connect to the registration form from a university computer (i.e., the computer must have an i.p. address in the range specified for USU in order to authenticate database users as members of the USU community).
2) Be sure to provide your USU email address on the registration form, as this is key for CAS to authenticate you as eligible to use the USU subscription to the database (e.g., firstname.lastname@usu.edu, or @aggiemail.usu.edu).

USU has additional concurrent access until June 26,2009 to facilitate registration for web accounts; on June 27 USU will return to a single-user subscription.

When you sign up for an account, you’ll receive email that spells out the usual terms and conditions about protecting your username and password, not systematically downloading data, using SciFinder only for your personal research, and not using the database for other people. After you have an account, SciFinder is accessible from http://scifinder.cas.org

Please call or write to Flora Shrode (797-8033) or Trevor Alvord (797-0668) with any questions.

The Library and Your Course

Subject librarians at Merrill-Cazier and Quinney Libraries are available to help students with research assignments. Instructors may arrange for one or more class sessions with a librarian to introduce students to research tools and to help with individual search needs. Your subject librarian can help you develop research assignments, particularly for breadth, depth, capstone, or seminar courses. Librarians can create LibGuides, customized web pages to highlight the relevant databases for a course or discipline.
