Technical Services:
In Cataloging:
This means the title is in the Cataloging Dept. Please call
John Fleming in Acquisitions (7-2674) to ask that the item is rushed through process. Be prepared to give your name and A-number so that when the item is brought to the Circulation staff, they can notify you when item is ready.
In Transit:
Indicates that an item has been checked-in and is on its way to the proper location. For
example, a journal volume turned in at the 1st floor circulation desk will be checked in, but it will indicate “in transit” until the title reaches the 2nd floor where it is returned to the BARN.
Newly Acquired (may say Approval Order as the Collection):
These titles have been purchased on the
approval plan and are in the pipeline for cataloging. Call John Fleming in Acquisitions (7-2674) to rush and be prepared to give your name and A-number so that when the item is brought to the Circulation staff, they can notify you when item is ready.
On Order:
Indicates an item that has not yet been received. If a patron urgently needs a title that is on
order, you may call John Fleming in Acquisitions (7-2674) to find out if he can estimate when the title
may arrive and be prepared to give your name and A-number so that when the item is brought to the Circulation staff, they can notify you when item is ready.
Circulation:
Claimed Returned:
Patron claims to have returned the item. This opens a six-week period of arbitration
which allows both the circulation department and the patron to conduct a deep search for the item.
Patron’s borrowing privileges are not suspended.
Extremely Overdue:
An item has been overdue for so long that we have sent the patron a replacement
bill. Patron’s borrowing privileges are suspended until the item is returned or paid for. Formerly, this
status appeared as "extremely overdue (lost)."
Missing:
Indicates that the title is lost and the patron has paid, but we do not have a copy of the title.
Trace:
A title for which staff are searching because while it is not checked out, it cannot be found on the
shelf.
BARN:
Closed Stack Access:
Item is on hold at the service point after having been requested from the BARN.
Shelving Cart:
May pertain to a volume that is waiting to be shelved in the BARN after the borrower
has returned it or to an item that was on hold at the Circulation desk but for which the ten day hold
period has expired.

New Book Display:
Titles with this designation are shelved with new books on the 2nd floor near the
McNaughton collection. These are removed periodically, at which point Circ staff change their status to "checked in" before shelving them at their regular call number location.
Unfortunately, budgets and serials inflation being what they are, we can not start a new subscription without canceling a current subscription that has an equivalent dollar amount. However, we do an annual serials review to identify new journals that are a priority. Please, contact your Subject Librarian for help.
