Others microforms are located in Government Documents or Special Collections & Archives on the Lower Level of the Library. Consult the Library Online Catalog for the exact location. Microforms are acetate images, which have been reduced in scale from the item's original size, for instance, microfilm copies of the Salt Lake Tribune. Most of the microforms in the Merrill-Cazier Library collection are microfilm and microfiche, although we do have some microprint and ultra fiche.
Microfilm is produced in long strips, like motion picture film, and comes in 16 and 35-millimeter sizes. The microfilm strips are stored in boxes, which are often labeled with call numbers and to some degree, bibliographic information. These boxes are placed in the BARN and held in trays, each of which can hold up to 45 microfilm reels, and stored in call number order or by title. We have reader and reader/printers available to read and print microfilm.
Microfiche are transparencies that come in either 3" x 5" or 4" x 6" sheets. The microfiche in the Library's collection are stored in the BARN and held in trays, each tray being able to hold up to 45" of microfich per bin. The Merrill-Cazier Library microforms collection also contains a type of microfiche called ultra fiche. Ultra fiche is a 4" x 6" sheet that can hold up to 3,000 pages of images. Because the images are so small, ultra fiche requires a special lens. An example of ultra fiche in the Merrill-Cazier collection is: Microbook Library of English Literature (LEL-I).
Microcards are opaque microforms and include microprints. Microcards and microprint can have images on both sides while microfilm and microfiche, as transparencies, can have images on only one side. The microcards and microprint are also stored in the BARN.
