Scope and Content:

This collection contains images of the First Presbyterian Church of Logan including its members, ministry, activities, meetings, trips, worship services, other Presbyterian churches. The collection spans from 1921 through the early 1990s. Very few of the people in the photographs are identified.

This collection centers around life within the First Presbyterian Church in Logan. The collection begins with a box of photographs and snapshots which depict the church members and their interaction as a congregation.

Box 1 also contains three tintypes of early members of the faith in the Cache Valley area.

Box 2 contains a notebook of slides which covers similar material. The earliest images in this box are from 1956 and they continue through the 1980s.

Boxes 3 through 7 contain oversized photographs.

There are a total of 717 individual images in this collection, black-and-white silver gelatin prints, and color snapshots, 25 cm. x 37 cm. and smaller, and 472 slides. Framed photographs are maintained in their original frames and are housed in acid free boxes. Loose photographs are maintained in acid free folders which are also housed in acid free boxes. Slides have been placed in protective acid-free sleeves and organized in a binder.

Provenance:

This collection was acquired by Utah State University Special Collections and Archives in July 1995 from Reverend John McGarey.

Researcher Note:

The photos in this collection are arranged chronologically by topic. Some of the major topics include church members, functions, services, as well as views of the church building itself. This collection also contains numerous slides which are arranged in a similar fashion. Where necessary, size was a factor in the organization of the photographs.

Acetate and color negatives have been removed to cold storage box 29. Patrons must request to view these negatives 3 hours in advance.

Acetate and color negatives (01:08:01-06, 01:09:01, 01:11:05-06, 01:11:09-11, 01:11:16-17, 01:14:06-07, 01:27:01, and 01:39:06) have been removed to cold storage box 29.

01:01:01-01:01:03. Tintypes. This folder contains three tintypes, presumably of early members of the Presbyterian faith in Cache Valley. Two of the pictures are of men and one of women. There are two individuals portrayed in each image.

01:02:01-01:02:05. 1921 - Views of Member's Home. This folder contains several photographs of the residence of a member family, the Pillsburys.

01:03:01. 1921 - View of Church. This folder contains a photograph of the old wooden church building taken on Easter Sunday of 1921. The entire congregation is posed in front of the chapel.

01:04:01-01:04:02. 1940s - Church Members. This folder contains two photographs of church members in the 1940s. One is a wallet-sized portrait of a young woman, and the other appears to be a portrait of a quartet (two men and two women) taken on the grounds of the church itself.

01:05:01-01:05:05. 1940s - View of Church. This folder contains several photographs of the church taken circa 1940s. Three of the photos are evening/night shots highlighting the Christmas cross and wreath displayed on the exterior of the building. The other two photographs are daytime photographs of the church.

01:06:01. 1940s - Views of Church. This folder contains several copies of an 8x10 winter-time photograph taken of the church's exterior.

01:07:01-01:07:12. 1950s - McDonald Wedding. This folder contains several photographs of the wedding ceremony and celebration of two congregation members in the early 1950s. Also included is an engagement portrait of the couple.

01:08:01-01:08:06. 1950s - Church Functions - 75th Anniversary, 1952. This folder contains several photos of the celebration held in honor of the 75th anniversary of the Presbyterian Church in Logan. Highlighted are the cake in honor of the occasion as well as visiting clergy and dignitaries at the formal celebration.

01:09:01-01:09:02. 1950s - Church Functions - Banquets. This folder contains two photographs of banquets held for various occasions at the church. (One of these occasions is specified on the photograph as a dinner for American and international college students which was held on November 23, 1958.)

Box 2. First Presbyterian Church - Slides

This box contains material similar to the previous box in slide form. Some of the highlights include: the church outing to Guinavah (Logan Canyon) in 1967, dedication services of 1956, the "Ladies Night" activities from 1961, religious illustrations, a trip to Northern California, church members from 1954-64, as well as different occasions involving Rev. and Mrs. Bruner. The majority of the slides are in color, with only a very few in black and white.
