Utah State University's Veterans History Project Collection began in 2003 as a means of documenting the personal histories of Northern Utah war veterans and those who served in support of them in order to more fully understand and acknowledge the local, state, and national U.S. military heritage. This project is part of the larger Library of Congress Veterans History Project, an impressive nationwide effort created with unanimous support by the United States Congress and signed into law by President Clinton on 27 October 2000. Public Law 106-380 calls upon the American Folklife Center at the LOC (and partner institutions, like Utah State University Libraries Special Collections and Archives) to collect and preserve audio- and video-taped oral histories, along with documentary materials such as letters, diaries, maps, photographs, and home movies, of America's war veterans and those who served in support of them. The Veterans History Project covers World War I, World War II, and the Korean, Vietnam, and Persian Gulf wars. It includes all participants in those wars--men and women, civilian and military. It documents the contributions of civilian volunteers, support staff, and war industry workers as well as the experiences of military personnel from all ranks and all branches of service--the Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, and Navy, as well as the U.S. Coast Guard and Merchant Marine.
All participants in USU's Veterans History Project are included in the Library of Congress Veterans History Project's National Registry of Service. The collection continues to grow.
The USU Veterans History Project began on 14 June 2003 when Utah State University Libraries Special Collections and Archives, with support from the Utah Humanities Council, hosted a one day Veterans Oral History Workshop to train interested northern Utah residents to collect oral histories of local U.S. veterans and those who served in support of them. Fifty individuals participated in the workshop. After the workshop, fieldworkers conducted tape-recorded oral interviews with local veterans concerning their wartime experiences. The tapes and transcripts from these interviews were donated to USU Libraries Special Collections and Archives. In addition, interested veterans contacted USU Libraries Special Collections and Archives in order to donate memoirs, letters, photographs, and other wartime documents. Thus, the items in the USU Veterans History Project Collection grew out of a community effort to record and preserve local U.S. wartime histories for present and future generations.
On 7 November 2003, a free public presentation of USU's Veterans Oral History Project was hosted by The Friends of USU Libraries, Concert and The Lecture Series at the [Logan] Tabernacle, Special Collections & Archives, USU Air Force ROTC, the Utah Humanities Council, and the Logan Herald Journal. The presentation "Voices of Cache Valley Veterans" honored five veterans who participated in the project: Rex Thompson, Blair Hale, R. Dell Tripp, Paul E. Huber, and fieldworker, Lt. Colonel Jeffrey Bateman.
Utah State University’s Special Collections and Archives will collect and preserve audio- and video-taped oral histories and transcriptions, along with documentary materials such as original letters, original diaries, maps, identified photographs, and home movies, of U.S. war veterans and those who served in support of them. The target groups are northern Utah and southeastern Idaho veterans and support persons and, on a limited basis, USU alumni and USU affiliate veterans and support persons. For more information on this collection, subject search "Veterans History Project" on USU's online catalog.
The materials do NOT circulate and are not available through interlibrary loan.
