Frank James Calkins was born in 1932 at Portland, Oregon. During his teens he moved to Utah and enrolled in the University of Utah where graduated with a bachelor's degree in English. After completing his degree he served in the Navy as a commissioned officer, then he enrolled in Utah State University to study wildlife management and later graduated with a M.A.. Following his graduation Calkins worked as a game warden for the state of Utah for several years. During this time he also worked as an editor for the Utah Fish and Game magazine. Shortly thereafter he gave up working as a game warden and moved to Star Valley, Wyoming to become a freelance writer. As a conservationist, his writings concern western land issues and environmental politics. In 1970 he published his first book Rocky Mountain Warden which he described as a book about "the education of a game warden among the wild creatures (poachers and others) in one of the most rugged corners of the wilderness." His other books include Jackson Hole (1973), The Tan-Faced Children (1978), The Long Rider’s Winter (1983), and Riley’s Last Hunt (1986).
