Biographical Sketch:
Asahel Henry Smith was born on December 5, 1880 to Augusta Maria Outzen and Jessie N. Smith. Asahel Henry Smith was the son of Jesse Nathaniel Smith, pioneer settler in the Snowflake, Arizona town and President of the Snowflake, Arizona stake. Pauline was born on March 26, 1885 to Ida Hunt and David K Udall. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on April 2, 1909. They went on to have nine children. Asahel and Pauline were the parents of George Ellsworth’s wife, Maria. Asahel and Pauline lived in Snowflake, Arizona for their first year of marriage. Then, they moved to Hunt, Arizona in 1910 and lived there until 1922. Asahel spent his time farming, ranching and serving for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. While in Hunt, Asahel served as bishop for 6 ½ years and then he served 5 ½ years on the Stake High Council. In 1922, the Smith family moved back to Snowflake. Pauline was named Stake Primary President and Asahel was named president of the High Priest Quorum, each served in their calling for 17 years. Asahel spent time as the town clerk in Snowflake. He also worked as secretary of Snowflake and Taylor Irrigation Company. Asahel died in Snowflake on September 7, 1947. Provenance:
After Pauline’s second stroke, Maria went to Mesa to take care of her mother while caretaker Elsie was on vacation. While there disposition of family papers was determined. Maria searched the house for papers of historical value, and she and her mother sorted. A few articles, including pictures, were to be given to Ida Smith Church. The remainder were given to Maria. Of the experience, Maria wrote home: “During the past two days and nights I have pretty well searched out all written materials I want to take home with me. Only a few items are really valuable. The first afternoon I found the notebook with Grandma’s journal. All of the family are pleased. . . . Today I found some letters from Grandma that pleased me. . . . It has been good for me to be around my family like this. I have so much more admiration for each one. . . . I have also been renewed in my desire to write about my people. (Maria to George, dated 30 May 1967, Mesa) Maria brought the papers to Logan in a citrus case. Since then they have been sorted and given proper arrangement and care.

This collection is organized by generation and family name. It begins with the life of Asahel Henry Smith and continues with the lives of his wife, Pauline, and their children and grandchildren. The collection includes many original letters and records with some typescript copies of the documents.
