Historical Note
The Folklore in the News Collection contains ephemeral items (many newspaper articles) that deal with Utah and surrounding
areas, including folk customs, beliefs, folk groups, material culture, legends, etc.
Provenance
The materials in the Folklore in the News Collection date from approximately 1979. Along with Austin and Alta Fife, Professor
William A. Wilson and Barbara Garrett noted folklore items in the news and began to collect these items of interest.
From that time forward the FFA faculty and staff have collected folklore items of interest from a variety of sources,
including newspaper, magazine, brochure, etc. In 2005, Randy Williams reviewed and organized the material by
genre and boxed and foldered the Collection and created this register.
Scope and Content
The materials in the Folklore in the News Collection include newspaper clippings, brochures, programs, and other
ephemeral folklore items (1979 to present). All materials are housed in acid-free archival boxes and divided into seperate
folders by genre, with each item noted therein and stored in USU Special Collections and Archives.
To access the collection a patron must have the following information: collection number, box number,
folder number and item number. The materials do not circulate and are available in USU's Special Collections and
Archives.
